Tijdens het eerste college van crosslab hadden we een presentatie van Maki Ueda. Het ging over geuren en hoe je de authentieke geur van een land in een flesje kan krijgen. Ze had diverse geuren bij zich zoals oude kaas, hooi, miso soep en sinterklaas. Tijdens de presentatie hebben had ze ook haat eigen geur in een postje best bizar..Maki Ueda I’m researching on the scents and the sense of smell. My challenge is to use them as a medium in art. The sense of smell is one of the most instinctive sense of the body, and it creates the instant connection to our imaginations and memories.Before I was working with the digital media researching on the remote and global awareness by means of internet and real-time video. (a digital installation in the public space Hole in the Earth (2004)) The scent travels beyond time and space, directly contacting one’s image and memory. These characters of the scent as a medium is something totally different from that of the digital media I’ve found.I am using the basic chemistry and cooking technique in my mini-laboratory for extracting the scents. Once I’ve worked for a performance artist on scenting the space and perfuming the cosmetics used in the performance. Recently I’m receiving different interesting assignments which create another dimention in my work.In the year 2007-2008 I am participating the interdiciplinary art & science laboratory FoAM based in Brussels. For my olfactory research I received subsidy from Japanese cosmetic company POLA in 2007.
